Social Security Wage Base 2026
The 2026 OASDI wage base is $184,500. Here is what that means for high earners, self-employed filers, and paycheck planning once Medicare continues without a cap.

For 2026 the Social Security Administration set the taxable wage base at $184,500. Employee Social Security tax is 6.2% on wages up to that amount. Once your cumulative Social Security wages hit the base, the 6.2% stops for the rest of the year. Medicare tax at 1.45% continues on all wages, and Additional Medicare Tax may apply above statutory thresholds.
In 2025 the wage base was $176,100. The jump to $184,500 means high earners pay Social Security tax on an extra $8,400 of wages—about $521 more of employee OASDI across the year if they clear the base.
Paycheck timing
If you earn well above the base, your early paychecks include the full 6.2%. Later in the year, after the base is reached, net pay rises even if gross pay is unchanged. Payroll systems track year-to-date Social Security wages; if you switch employers, the new employer generally starts withholding Social Security again unless you coordinate overwithholding claims on the return.
Self-employed people pay both the employee and employer shares through Schedule SE (with the employer-equivalent half deductible above the line). The same wage base caps the Social Security portion of SE tax; Medicare does not stop.
Planning notes
Deferred compensation, bonuses, and equity vesting that count as Social Security wages can push you over the base earlier than base salary alone. That is useful for cash-flow forecasting: model FICA with year-to-date wages so late-year bonuses do not double-count OASDI after the cap.
The wage base does not change income-tax brackets. Someone who “maxes Social Security tax” still faces ordinary income tax on taxable income above the standard deduction. Keep FICA and Form 1040 math in separate columns when you compare offers.
Use the FICA calculator with tax year 2026 and your filing status to see Social Security, Medicare, and Additional Medicare Tax on a given wage level. Pair it with the paycheck calculator if you care about per-period take-home once the wage base is exhausted.
