Premium Tax Credit in plain terms
The Premium Tax Credit (PTC) helps eligible households afford health insurance bought through the Marketplace. The credit caps what you should pay toward the benchmark plan as a percentage of household income, based on federal poverty level (FPL) percentages. The difference between the benchmark premium and your required contribution is the allowable credit—applied in advance to monthly premiums or claimed on the return.
Geography drives benchmark premiums. A Silver plan in rural Wyoming does not cost what an identical household pays in Manhattan. That is why this calculator requires you to enter the annual benchmark premium from your marketplace account or Form 1095-A—not a national average we invent.
2025 enhanced vs 2026 statutory schedules
Congress has periodically expanded PTC parameters—capping contribution percentages for lower incomes and extending eligibility further up the income scale. The 2025 enhanced mode in this tool reflects simplified enhanced contribution tables useful when modeling coverage tied to the 2025 plan year.
For 2026 planning, select the statutory simplified schedule unless you know enhanced subsidies apply to your coverage year. Policy can change; verify the contribution percentage table on IRS Form 8962 instructions for the year you file.

How to use this calculator
Step 1 — Gather household MAGI
Estimate modified adjusted gross income for everyone on the tax return who is in the marketplace tax family. Include wages, self-employment, taxable retirement, and most other income. Use the federal income tax calculator as a starting point for AGI components.
Step 2 — Enter tax family size
Household size for PTC follows marketplace rules—not always the same as people on your tax return. Include dependents claimed who need coverage.
Step 3 — Enter benchmark premium
Use the second-lowest-cost Silver plan (SLCSP) annual premium for your rating area. Form 1095-A Part III often shows monthly benchmark figures you can annualize.
Step 4 — Enter advance PTC received
Summarize advance credit paid to insurers during the year from 1095-A. The tool estimates repayment or additional credit at reconciliation.
Expected contribution mechanics
IRS tables map FPL percentage to an expected contribution percentage of household income. Required annual contribution = MAGI × percentage. Allowable PTC equals benchmark premium − required contribution (floored at zero, capped at premium paid).
Example shape: household at 250% FPL might owe 8% of MAGI toward the benchmark while the benchmark costs $12,000. If MAGI is $55,000, required contribution is $4,400 and allowable credit is about $7,600 before advances.
Repayment cliffs and reconciliation risk
Underestimating income when enrolling triggers advance credits that exceed allowable amounts—you repay on Form 8962, often capped by repayment limits for lower incomes. Overestimating income means you may claim additional credit at filing.
Marriage, divorce, job loss, and bonus income mid-year change MAGI. Update marketplace income estimates promptly to reduce April surprises. The 2026 standard deduction is $16,100 for single and married filing separately filers, $24,150 for head of household, and $32,200 for married filing jointly (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32). Standard deduction amounts affect AGI but PTC uses MAGI with specific add-backs.
Interaction with other 2026 tax items
For 2026, the IRA contribution limit is $7,500 with a $1,100 catch-up at age 50 and older. Elective deferrals to 401(k), 403(b), and most workplace plans cap at $24,500, with catch-up contributions of $8,000 at age 50+ and an enhanced $11,250 catch-up for ages 60 through 63 under SECURE 2.0. HSA limits are $4,400 for self-only HDHP coverage and $8,750 for family coverage, plus a $1,000 catch-up at 55+. Social Security wages for payroll tax purposes stop at the $184,500 wage base (SSA 2026).
401(k) deferrals reduce MAGI and can increase PTC if they pull FPL percentages lower. Roth conversions spike MAGI and can reduce or eliminate credits—model conversions in the Roth conversion calculator before executing in a marketplace year.
Common mistakes
- Using the premium you pay instead of the benchmark SLCSP
- Ignoring advance credits already received when estimating refund
- Applying the wrong year's contribution percentage table
- Leaving a spouse off the tax family after marketplace enrollment
- Assuming enhanced subsidies continue without checking statute

PTC rules follow IRC §36B and Form 8962. FPL tables are published by HHS. This tool uses simplified contribution schedules for education—confirm official tables before filing.
Documentation and recordkeeping
Keep copies of forms, notices, and account statements that support numbers you enter. IRS audits and state reviews often start with mismatches between third-party reporting and what you claimed. Reconcile calculator outputs to official worksheets before filing.
When to revisit your estimate
Life changes mid-year—marriage, divorce, a move, bonus income, or a new job—can shift brackets, credits, and phaseouts. Rerun the tool when those events occur rather than relying on a January estimate through December.
State and local taxes
This page focuses on federal rules unless noted. Many states piggyback on federal AGI or MAGI definitions but apply their own rates and credits. Pair federal estimates with the state income tax calculator when residency matters.
Professional guidance
Complex returns—AMT, NIIT, multi-state income, business ownership, or large conversions—benefit from a CPA or enrolled agent who can sign the return. Calculators here show the math chain; they do not replace personalized advice or e-file validation.
Methodology on this site
Core 2026 federal brackets, deductions, and payroll limits follow IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32, SSA wage-base announcements, and CMS Medicare premium tables where applicable. We show assumptions in the result panel when a rule is simplified for education.
Frequently asked questions
Why must I enter the benchmark premium?
Premium Tax Credit amounts depend on the second-lowest-cost Silver plan (SLCSP) for your rating area and household. Premiums vary by county and plan year. This tool does not fabricate marketplace quotes—you enter the annual benchmark from HealthCare.gov or your state exchange.
What is the difference between 2025 enhanced and 2026 statutory modes?
2025 marketplace years may reflect enhanced subsidy parameters from prior legislation. 2026 planning uses a simplified statutory contribution schedule unless Congress extends enhancements. Select the schedule year that matches your coverage year.
How does advance PTC reconciliation work?
If you received advance premium tax credits during the year, Form 8962 compares allowable credit to advances on your return. You repay excess advances or claim additional credit if advances were too low.
What income counts as MAGI for PTC?
Household MAGI generally includes AGI plus excluded foreign income and tax-exempt Social Security interest, with other modifications per Form 8962. It must be estimated for the whole tax family on the marketplace application.
Can I get PTC with employer coverage?
Generally no if affordable employer-sponsored coverage is available to you. Minimum essential coverage elsewhere, Medicaid, Medicare, and incarceration also affect eligibility. This calculator assumes marketplace eligibility inputs you confirm.
